Shinonome Shinkin Bank Maebashi

(Page  77)

This complex facility with a Shinkin bank was born as a renovation
project of an old bank built in 1964 located in central area of
Maebashi city, Gunma prefecture. As the neighborhood is run-ofthe-
mill, the project has to be something like a replay point in the
context, and the establishment, making the most of tall trees and
deck walks, makes as an open space for relaxation and use the
same materials for both exterior and interior, to present continuity
of architectural spaces. There is a double height atrium which
includes a cafe, bank teller windows, and a library. Upstairs, there
are offices, canteen for employees, and a big hall and the tenant
offices.

TAKENISHI TERRACE

(Page  98)

Locating in old shopping street in Oita city, Oita prefecture, this
small complex building includes coffee stand, donut shop, and
deli. They planned at first to make the site a parking lot but later
changed the program. The planner would like to share the project
concept with the tenants to propel the region toward communal
prosperity. There are three zones without dead-end corridor and
smooth traffic lines for shoppers to buy as much as possible.
Excavated ground levels were kept and used as benches. Shop
fronts are easily accessible, and visitors feel change of seasons,
and the establishment looks open and welcoming for anyone.

ONIBUS COFFEE Jiyugaoka

(Page  164)

ONIBUS COFFEE Jiyugaoka is a new type of Onibus Coffee. At
an early stage of this project, the owner, architect and his staff
went to mountains to cut out thinned wood and it was used as
spandrel wall of a counter and log partitions. Interior materials
were selected to fit these wooden parts. The cafe has counter,
L-shaped bench, and sofas. Decoration of columns and difference
of the floor materials show each seating area. Timbers are also
used as outdoor bench, producing bustle in the town.

SUNDAY JAM's CLUB

(Page  180)

Located in Higashi-nakano, Tokyo, this is a renovation project of
an old house beside the railroad tracks. The establishment is
composed of two floors with 3m width and there are two stair
wells on both ends of the building, presenting unity of the first
floor and the second floor. The second level was designed like a
floating ship in a building. There is a small terrace space
overlooking the railroad and it has additional two wall openings.
To keep sixty old atmosphere of the original building, the architect
purposely did not erase the graffiti on the wall nor changed the
existing interior elements. Additional steps and the counter used
yellowish artificial marble which matches up original yellowed
walls.

This establishment is a daytime Japanese tea cafe and spicy bistro
at night, Also, it is a small factory to produce confectionary and
delicatessen. The oblong interior has a long counter for nine
people. The entrance is designed as a “doma”(the space between
indoors and outdoors in a Japanese house), and the allay as “toriniwa”(
passing yard), and the borders are paved. In front of the
counter, there installed aluminum framed openings so that
customers can focus on something in front of their eyes, like
dishes and cups and movement of employees. Impressive

foods.
