COMPLEX FACILITY

OIMACHI TRACKS

(Page  36)

OIMACHI TRACKS opened in Oimachi, Tokyo, this past March.
Adjacent to the General Rolling Stock Center, which manages
nearly all JR Yamanote Line trains, it is an open-air mall-style
complex consisting of two buildings: the “HOTEL & RESIDENCE
TOWER” and the “BUSINESS TOWER.” The design concept
involves layering three-dimensional “streets” that connect with the
city, taking into account the gently sloping terrain and the
streetscape of Oimachi, which features shopping arcades and
narrow alleys. The project is intended to serve as a “hub for
co-creating urban life” within “Greater Shinagawa”, a collaborative
urban development zone being promoted between Hamamatsucho
Station and Oimachi Station to create new attractions for Tokyo.

MoN Takanawa: The Museum of Narratives

In March of this year, two mixed-use complexes opened in
TAKANAWA GATEWAY CITY. “NEWoMan TAKANAWA
MIMURE” is a food-focused complex developed through a
collaboration between the Kyoto-based coffee roaster Ogawa
Coffee and Lumine. Designed to be a part of everyday life, many
of its stores handle everything from production to service entirely
within the facility. Set against a monochromatic backdrop, the
sight of food being prepared adds a lively atmosphere, while the
dishes served and the people passing by bring a touch of color to
the space. “MoN Takanawa” is a museum whose swirling exterior
draws visitors in. In addition to exhibition rooms, various open
spaces are provided, allowing both the interior and exterior of the
building to function as venues for cultural activities and relaxation.

BASEGATE YOKOHAMA KANNAI

(Page  98)

In March 2026, the large-scale mixed-use complex “BASEGATE
YOKOHAMA KANNAI” opened on the site of the former
Yokohama City Hall in Kanagawa Prefecture. It is positioned as a
hub designed to generate new foot traffic in the Kannai area. The
administrative wing of the former Yokohama City Hall, designed
by Togo Murano, has been converted and reborn as a hotel and
commercial facility. The project preserves the architectural
features of the original building—such as its checkerboardpatterned
exterior—throughout the complex, aiming to enhance
the existing structure’s charm while creating new value. “THE
LIVE Supported by DAIWA JISHO,” one of Japan’s largest liveviewing
facilities, is situated directly in front of JR Kannai Station.
The complex also features a space that extends the station plaza,
offering an open-air environment where visitors can experience
sports and entertainment.

DEAN & DELUCA SHINAGAWA & OIMACHI

(Page  126)

This project involves the renovation of the “DEAN & DELUCA”
store located within Tokyo’s Shinagawa Station, as well as a new
store within the new commercial complex “OIMACHI TRACKS.”
While paying homage to the brand’s philosophy—which has
continued to promote “a rich daily life filled with food” for 25 years
since its arrival in Japan—the design aims to create an open,
warm space where food creators and those who enjoy their
creations can come together. The concept is “HANDS OF
MAKERS.” By collaborating with artisans and manufacturers from
across the country, the design carefully preserves the traces and
subtle variations created by human hands in the materials and
details that make up the space.

Alternative Artefacts Danto

(Page  144)

Danto, a tile manufacturer based on Awaji Island in Hyogo
Prefecture, has a history spanning over 100 years. In 2024, the
company appointed architect Teruhiro Yanagihara as its creative
director and launched a new tile brand called “Alternative
Artefacts Danto.” This project aims to set a new standard for tiles
that can be used for many years to come. It also discovers new
value in tiles by experimenting with unprecedented colors and
shapes. Furthermore, while leveraging Danto’s strength in mass
production technology, the series enables delicate tile designs.
This article introduces the development history of “Alternative
Artefacts Danto” and explores new possibilities for tiles.

Wakayama Kishukan

(Page  157)

“Wakayama Kishukan,” a promotional shop for Wakayama
Prefecture located in Yurakucho, Tokyo, has reopened following a
renovation. The interior makes extensive use of Kishu cypress,
known for its beautiful color and minimal warping. The fixtures,
created by simply stacking the wood, highlight the material’s
natural presence while showcasing the wide range of products.
Additionally, the circular countertop and the mesh surrounding the
existing pillars feature the color orange inspired by Wakayama’s
citrus fruits. The space offers a firsthand experience of
Wakayama’s charm.
