Azabudai Hills is a development project that took about 35 years
to complete with the 300 rights holders of the “Urban
Development Council” established in 1989. The project was
planned as a town for mature adults where time passes slowly and
leisurely, with the concept of “Green & Wellness” and an attempt
to embody true luxury in the future society, aiming to create a town
like a plaza surrounded by greenery that connects people. The
area is home to a variety of stores that support a rich lifestyle,
including residence buildings, hotels, offices, markets, a variety of
restaurants, fashion and bookstores, and more.

NEW SHOP&ENVIRONMENT
TOKYU PLAZA HARAJUKU ‘HARAKADO’
(Page 74)
The project is a complex facility that will become a new symbol of
Harajuku, a town that has created numerous trends. The facility is
not a conventional commercial facility, but rather a “creative
facility,” featuring not only stores, but also offices, a center for
creators to gather and interact, a public bath, and a three-story
garden. It is not just a place for consumption, but a facility for
exchange and creativity. The glazed exterior of the building forms
a polygonal shape, reflecting the changes in the cityscape, traffic,
and sky, and showing the activities inside the building to the city.
The building is an extension of the surrounding topography, with a
three-tiered external space on the rooftop that is used as a place
for relaxation and to draw in, nurture, and transmit Harajuku's
character.

stand umineko SiB100
(Page 106)
This is a beer stand that opened near the entrance to the
Hyakkendana area in Shibuya. It is a renovation project for a small
building with a frontage of 5.4 m and a depth of 3 to 4.2 m, with
one floor measuring 17.28㎡ . The facade has two-story-high
construction frames, which give the interior an incongruous
appearance with the nearby streetscape, as if the interior is
bumping outward. While many stores that open onto the street
have been created and many practices have been implemented in
stores located on the ground floor, this project is unique in that it
dares to attempt to expose the second floor directly to the street.

Dorogawa Onsen Brewery
(Page 116)
The brewery is wide open to the street, reflecting the designer's
desire to make it a part of the city, both physically and practically.
The interior is decorated with custom-made tiles inspired by old
medicines with a long history and Japanese paper made from
persimmon tannin, which, like beer, is produced through
fermentation. The exterior of the building, which was a coffee
shop prior to the renovation, has been minimally modified and
designed to fit in with the landscape that has become familiar over
the years. Since its opening, the brewery has been used not only
by tourists but also by workers at nearby inns as a place to
communicate after work and is gradually becoming a part of the
town.

Think Kiryu
(Page 119)
Think Kiryu is a store with a beer stand inside Shin-Kiryu station
on the Tobu Railway Kiryu line. To create a beer stand and a store
for local products in a small space with a floor area of only 10㎡ ,
the designer created a minimal curved counter and display shelves
along the wall. Stainless steel and tiles were used on the beer
stand side, while slate and linden plywood were used on the
concession stand side to create a contrast of materials, and the
walls were painted in dark and light colors. The shape of the beer
taps and the slate corrugated plates on the movable shelves were
inspired by the saw-tooth roof factory that remains as a cultural
heritage in Kiryu City. The counter tops are finished with a base of
Mortex, dyed by the hands of Kiryu dyeing artisans.

inclus wine & brewing
(Page 122)
Inclus wine & brewing is both a vin nature store and a nonalcoholic
beer brewery. The first floor, a former garage, houses a
stand-and-drink bar with tastings, a walk-in wine cellar and
brewery, and the entrance to the residence; the second floor is a
multipurpose space for community outreach, and the third and
fourth floors are the owners’ residences. The facade to the busy
front street has wood fittings as seen in the house. The wine cellar
and brewery are also separated by the same wood fittings, which
can be opened and closed to change the effective space between
inside and outside.

REPORT
MILAN DESIGN WEEK 2024
(Page 145)
The 62nd Salone Internazionale del Mobile in Milan saw a 20.2%
increase in the number of visitors compared to the previous year
and overcoming the crisis of downsizing caused by the Corona
disaster, many exhibitors and visitors came from all over the world.
This year’s show also included kitchen and bathroom exhibits, and
there were many attempts to present a design-based approach to
environmental and increasingly serious social issues. Being
sustainable is now a prerequisite for design, and proposals to fuse
conflicting elements, such as the fusion of tradition and new
technology, and original materials and sustainability, stood out.
FOCUS
MUFG PARK / LIBRARY
(Page 176)
A sports field for bank employees owned by Mitsubishi UFJ
Financial Group was opened to the public under this plan. The
concept is to share the precious “Musashino Forest” that was left
on the site with the citizens and pass it on to the next generation.
The library, which will serve as the nucleus of this citizen
interaction, was newly built in an arrangement that does not
damage the trees and their roots, along with the park paths and
infrastructure, and the existing sports facilities were reorganized.
Aiming to make the library a place where people from all walks of
life can casually drop by, the library is gently curved along the
parkway. Children play, people watch outdoor events, and enjoy
reading, talking, eating, and drinking on the open veranda
overlooking a large grassy plaza with deep eaves that cut through
the green landscape. Inside the building, structural columns
double as sashes, reducing visual noise and integrating the
shallow depth of the interior with the outdoors, bringing the
richness of nature close at hand.
