GREEN SPRINGS

(Page 78)

Urban development project GREEN SPRINGS was planned in a
national park in Tachikawa city, Tokyo. It includes a hotel, office,
music hall, museum and commercial complex. The total design
theme is “ a well-being town” and the architecture introduced
healing power of the nature keeping balance with the natural
surroundings. The second floor has an artificial ground and a
square with rich green, upon a concept by “engawa (edging strip)
of town”. Interior and exterior look as they are fused here, for a lot
of folding doors and sliding doors are used.

CAFE & COFFEE STAND

AKITSU TOSHIZANE COFFEE

(Page 105)

Located in a residential area in Akitsu-machi, Hiroshima, AKITSU
TOSHIZANE COFFEE is a cafe and roasting factory, which is
near Seto inland sea. This old town still has some remains of
brewery, oyster farming, and shipbuilding industry. The cafe is a
renovation project of dwelling with shop damaged by heavy rain in
western Japan in 2018. The cafe cheers up the devasted city and
people see the cafe owner making tasty coffee through the big
window. The store front and the space between indoors and
outdoors in the house makes a free “doma” area, catering local
community center for events and whatever.

CAFE & COFFEE STAND

KASHIYA SHINONOME / KISSA HANGETSU

(Page 124)

This confectionery shop is a renovation from an ex-furniture store.
The ground story, take-out-shop, uses the salvaged antique door
of the furniture store. The curvy interior decorations remind us of
British style and fixtures. KISSA HANGETSU is on the second
story, which is a kind of chic retreat bar with a long counter. The
style basically looks European, but it effectively mixes objects of
Japanese old kissaten (tearoom) style, such as wood carving
bear, so the total environment successfully makes a Japanese-
Western eclectic style.

TOILET SPACE DESIGN

GRANDBERRY PARK TOILET

(Page 165)

GRANDBERRY PARK is a redevelopment project as a part of
Minami-machida local base creating project joined by Tokyu
corporation and Machida city authorities. One of impressive thing
about this project is design of toilet, which was based on
merchandising for the whole building. For example, “botanical
toilet” is located in lifestyle zone and it focuses on green. Refresh
lounge in fashion shop area offers maze-like spatial design toilet,
appealing to female users. “With kids toilet” urges kids to use
toilets on their own. A toilet on the baby lounge has a rest area for
users with infants to have a break.

TOILET SPACE DESIGN

OIMACHI EKIMAE PUBLIC TOILET

(Page 178)

Here is an interesting public toilet in Oimachi, Tokyo. It was
designed as a comfortable local landmark facility. It is unusual that
the toilet building is composed of six detached private rooms and
some of them are towering. They are made of thin steel plates and
they change colors and expressions with the time and climates,
reflecting the sky, trees, and street. Inside the rooms, it is clean and
bright under the skylight with natural ventilation. Six rooms are for
six types of users and are not segregated by gender. The architect
said that this project would be a new type of public toilet in this age
of variety.
