TOKYU KABUKICHO TOWER

(Page  46)

Tokyu Kabukicho Tower is a high-rise complex with 48 floors
above ground, 5 floors below ground and approximately 225
meters high, specializing in entertainment, including a hotel,
theater, movie theater, and live hall. It is one of the redevelopment
plans for the former site of the commercial building "Shinjuku
TOKYU MILANO" that integrates the legacy of the Kabukicho
area, pop culture, tourism, and urban development planning. The
role of this project is two-fold: one is to create a hub for urban
tourism that will serve as the core of the city; the other is to create
a sense of circulation and liveliness in the city, and to develop the
infrastructure for urban tourism. The other is to create a lively city
scape, and to develop the infrastructure for urban tourism.
This plan, based on the concept of "creating a place to master
what you love," aims to weave the culture of the city and create
the future of Kabukicho market, which is expected to become a
new urban tourism center representing not only Kabukicho but
also Tokyo.

TOKYO MIDTOWN YAESU

(Page  86)

.In March 2023, Tokyo Midtown Yaesu, a 45-story complex with
four basement levels, celebrated its grand opening in Yaesu,
Tokyo. This mixed-use project is the most recent development in
the first phase of an urban redevelopment project underway in
three areas in front of Tokyo Station, with the second and third
phases of the project scheduled to open in 2025 and 2028,
respectively. The "Yaesu Public" on the second floor of the
building is a commercial area with coffee shops and taverns, but it
is also planned as a public space where office workers take a
break and where users of the underground bus terminal spend
time while waiting for their buses. What visitors see at the top of
the escalator from the first floor is a "sign tree," a public store sign
that allows people to stay, creating an environment that expresses
the concept of "Yaesu Public" where commerce and the public
intersect.

ES CON FIELD HOKKAIDO

(Page  112)

ES CON FIELD HOKKAIDO is a facility that can accommodate
35,000 people. The field is located in an excavated position in the
ground, and spectator seating is arranged in three levels: field
level, main level, and star level. The ballpark, which is covered
with natural grass, has Japan's first retractable roof, which slides
one large roof horizontally. The spectator seating surrounding the
field is configured in a mortar cross-section, making it easy to see
the games from any location and from any seat in the stadium. The
view is 360 degrees from the concourse, so spectators can see
the field from anywhere. Players, managers, ballpark staff, and
baseball team personnel have efficient flow lines that are tied
together so that the hydro room, weight room, trainer's room, and
other rooms are optimally arranged to allow people within the
stadium to perform efficiently.

Karuizawa Commongrounds

(Page  134)

The Karuizawa Commongrounds is former summer school
buildings for Aoyama Gakuin Women's Junior College. The
designer decided to modify the architectural cluster of buildings
on the site as a project to rewrite the environment to suit modern
life while preserving the memory and ecology of the site. Since the
bookstore serves as the hub of the scattered stores, it uses an
existing building that has been returned to its structural state.
They did not decorate the building, but rather let it look as it
should, and composed the bookshelves and furniture as plain as
possible, as well as the rust-proof coated steel frame and wooden
structure with its original expression, to create a space where
people can encounter books and the surrounding beautiful
landscape. At the same time, the designers chose colors and
materials that would create a sense of warmth in the places where
people would stay, creating a pleasant space of contrast and
balance.

Library in the Earth / KURKKU FIELDS villa cocoon

(Page  144)

KURKKU FIELDS, a sustainable farm and park, and its
accompanying underground library and lodging facility cocoon
opened in Kisarazu City, Chiba Prefecture. The underground
library is located in the middle of a mortar-shaped site, like a cave
under the ground. Visitors pass through a grass-covered
approach and a small entrance that leads through a horseshoeshaped
corridor of bookshelves. The circular domed reading hall
behind the bookshelves is supported by a reciprocal structure
supported by twenty eight climbing beams. “Cocoon” consists of
seven cocoon-shaped “villas”, a kitchen lounge, restaurant, and
sauna hut. The guest rooms are compact and cocoon-like spaces
that provide the necessary and sufficient relaxation and peace of
mind. Original furniture is carefully crafted and gives comfort to
the guests.
