KAI POROTO

(Page  40)

This hot spring ryokan accommodation introduced culture and
lifestyle of Ainu, indigenous people of Hokkaido, Sakhalin, and the
Kuril Islands. The building is located in Shiraoi, Hokkaido is known
as a former settlement of Ainu and the lake Poroto. The project
site, with a view of Tarumae Mountain in the distance, is near
outdoor exhibition of the settlement of Upopoy National Ainu
Museum and Park. Also, the site has a spring that Ainu once used,
so the architect designed a hallway to the ryokan along a river. On
the lake side of the guest room building straddling the river has a
canoe wharf and a sunken lounge with irori hearth where people
see antifreeze water surface. A guest room quoted Ainu family
style with a hearth and a low table and sofa with indirect lighting.
On the shore of the lake, the ryokan has a hot spring cottage
called “Sankaku-no-yu” which used tripod structure with
assembled logs. Birch, representing Hokkaido, is called “mother
tree”, for it protects other plants and enrich the nature. This
establishment used a lot of use in and out of the building,
protecting and foster Ainu culture.

SOIL SETODA

(Page  200)

Located near the entrance of shopping street in Ikuchijima,
Hiroshima prefecture, this complex building was designed to have
inn, cafe, restaurant, and tourist information center. This project
includes renovation of 140 years old warehouse, called “KURA”,
for salt storage and newly built establishment called “LIVING”.
The two buildings face each other across a road. “LIVING”,
restaurant and inn, has a big glazed opening on the ground floor
through which visitors can enjoy panoramic views of the sea and
