SUSTAINABILITY × SPATIAL DESIGN

(Page  52)

Mass production, mass consumption, and mass disposal in this
age nearly show deadlock that we cannot afford to leave.
Everything seems to be at a major turning point. Now is the time
for spatial designers to ponder direction and social contribution to
circulating society. Here picked up some intriguing projects:
KAMIKATSU ZERO WASTE CENTER, base of “zero waste”
campaign in Kamikatsucho, Tokushima prefecture, SANU 2nd
Home Yatsugatake 1st, accommodation facility in Yamanashi
prefecture, designed by sustainable wooded construction, and
more. Interviews with the designers of these projects give us
some useful insights.

GOOD CYCLE BUILDING 001

Asanuma Corporation Nagoya Branch Office
Renovation

(Page  67)

Nagoya branch of Asanuma Corporation was remodeled as an
environmentally friendly building. Making the most of the existing
parts, the project was renovated to take in the natural light and
wind. The westside front façade has 2.5m setback windows and
there are verandas on the 2nd to the 8th floors for plants. Also,
the façade installs Yoshinosugi cedar undried logs which could be
diverted for other uses in the future.
Some of the materials used for this remodeling are mostly natural
like wood and mud. Construction surplus soil from its site was
used as finishing materials inside and outside the building and
also for furnishing. The employees of Asanuma joined the
workshop for earth coating of the building. They also preserve the
building by themselves, as the participation in construction make
them feel an emotional attachment.

Single O, Australian specialty coffee roaster originated in Sydney,
whose motto is “Creative Rebellion”, always provides creative
solutions to environmental issues that affects coffee industry. This
flagship shop adopted sustainable materials for the interior. The
ceiling above the entry suspends paper art pieces which they
used also for the shop in Sydney. The tables are made of recycled
wasted plastic. A part of espresso bar was made by PANECO
material boards made from 90% waste clothing and waste
leather, so the interior is quite environmentally friendly.

CAFE & COFFEE STAND

Chura Ichigo Nanjo IchigoBanare

(Page  141)

This cafe is located in a site of strawberry field in Nanjo city,
Okinawa prefecture. The exterior walls show signs based on the
elements of strawberry: calyx, flesh, and fruit. The building looks
like a warehouse and blends in with surrounding green houses for
strawberry cultivation. The interior is quite simple and stark just to
show up merchandises. Strawberry-surface-textured counters,
red tables, and glass partitions have something in common to
make visitors feel strawberry. Industrial containers are stacked for
multiple uses. Some parts of the ceiling are perforated to let in
light. Such playfulness makes us feel like we are in “a secret
factory”.

MAKE A BASE WHERE PEOPLE GET TOGETHER 6

HOUSE F

(Page  212)

Located in Nagareyama city, Chiba prefecture, this project makes
a complex of house, office, and cafe, surrounded by houses newly
built for sale in neighborhood. As office workers generally spend
the day in the office and stay at home in the morning and evening,
both office and home have unmanned time. This project blurs
boundaries between the home and office and it has a café which
can be open to the local community. Irregularly composed box
style of the building is open and has an air of deliberate
imperfection to make people behave easy.

OLD HOUSE EXTENSION UPCYCLING

(Page  228)

A renovation project of forty years old private house to make a
home and office. Making the most of old obsolete house, an
architect was enthusiastic about creating new value responding to
the current of the time. Instead of contrasting the old and the new,
he emphasizes the spatial continuity that users experience. People
can use varied interiors depending on their mood in this
establishment that does not separate the working space and living
space. This makes a new type of dwelling for various work styles
and ways of living.
