NEW SHOP ENVIRONMENT

ACE HOTEL Kyoto

(Page 48)

Fusioning the East and the West is a main theme of the environmental design of this hotel, and some of talented artists from the West Coast and Kyoto collaborated for this project, which is embodied in details of construction finish and lighting fixtures. For example, Kori Girard designed partitions in a restaurant and black and white mosaic tiles on the floor. Metal mesh decoration was created based upon traditional craftsman technique in Kyoto and they are used for lamps on the rooftop bar and a bar on the second floor. Besides, a lot of Japanese traditional architectural elements are used in the interior, like plaster, timber, and rice papers, which are elegantly combined with Western style elements to express comfort and warmness and for travelers from all over the world.

A conversion project from an elementary school to a hotel. Combination of newness and nostalgia. All the hallways and stairs were left as they were and you can imagine kids were running there. The class rooms were completely transformed like another world.
Making the most of the existing details of the building, the designer chose subdued black and off-white inorganic materials and the same color scheme was used for art pieces, graphics, and FF&E. Visitors can enjoy unique appearance of the interior scenes based upon “mitate” which means to see something to resemble others.

NEW SHOP ENVIRONMENT

LOUIS VUITTON MAISON OSAKA MIDOSUJI

(Page 97)

Opened in Shinsaibashi, Osaka, LOUIS VUITTON MAISON OSAKA MIDOSUJI is the largest flagship shop of LOUIS VUITTON, as it has seven stories above the ground. Architect Jun Aoki, who had worked for the brand for long, designed the exterior of the shop and world famous Peter Marino architect created the interior from the first to the fourth floor. Louis Vuitton’s first cafe LE CAFÉ V and member’s exclusive restaurant SUGALABO V were designed by Japanese design firm A.N.D. As Osaka is a city of water, the total environmental design theme is “ship and travel”. Dynamic front facade looks like a ship sail, some parts of shop remind us of ship deck. The restaurant is reminiscent of a pilot house of ship. Every single detail comes from a well-made concept story. Furniture and merchandise laid out in big bright rooms proclaim strong will of the brand pursuing tradition and innovation of today.

SARUTAHIKO COFFEE The Bridge Harajuku Station opened in March, on the second floor of a new JR Harajuku station building. Inspired by Japanese alleys and spatial elements, this big cafe has 140 seats. The low ceiling and tatami-like chairs are intriguing, combining industrial style and Japanese style. Prior to this big project, SARUTAHIKO COFFEE Shimokitazawa, an 85㎡ small cafe, opened last December, on the ground floor of a new building near Shimokitazawa station. Plant pots are installed above the kitchen; the interior is calm and looks it were in the ground. Both of cafes are so different in terms of the scale and style, both are, none the less, attractive for coffee lovers.
